Ladder Safety: Protecting Your Team From the Ground Up

Springfield ladder anchor safety

BE SAFE! BE SAFE! At Springfield, Inc., safety, and especially ladder safety, is always our top priority—for our employees and for our clients’ teams. We are committed to creating safe working environments, whether on the ground or on the roof.

For years, we’ve installed temporary fall protection on every roof we work on. Now, with our Springfield SmartAnchor™ system, we can provide permanent fall protection for clients who want year-round safety. This protects not only our employees, but also anyone who needs to access the roof in the future.

Why Ladder Safety Matters

Before you can benefit from rooftop fall protection, you first need to get onto the roof safely. For most contractors, that means using a portable extension ladder—often multiple times a day. Over time, frequent use can make ladders feel routine, leading to complacency and risk-taking.

According to the National Safety Council (NSC), there are roughly 300 ladder-related deaths and more than 130,000 non-fatal ladder accidents in the U.S. each year. Many of these incidents occur because the ladder was not properly secured, causing it to slip, kick out, or slide sideways.

Key Ladder Safety Tips for Contractors

If you’re a contractor—especially a roofing contractor—implementing a ladder safety program is one of the best ways to protect your employees and your business. Here are a few essentials:

  • Always secure the ladder before climbing.

  • Inspect ladders regularly for wear, damage, or loose parts.

  • Maintain three points of contact when climbing.

  • Follow the 4-to-1 rule: For every 4 feet of ladder height, place the base 1 foot away from the wall.

  • Never exceed weight limits listed by the manufacturer.

Springfield’s Commitment to Safety

At Springfield, we know that ladder safety starts before you ever set foot on a roof. That’s why we’re always looking for ways to improve safety for our crews and for the companies we work with.
